Lead Paint Exposure

Prolonged exposure to lead can have a devastating and permanent impact on human health, especially in young children whose bodies are still developing. Lead is a naturally occurring element that can be found in many common household products, such as batteries, roofing, metal products (such as soldering products), and lead paint. Recently, Congress amended the standards for lead paint in toys intended for use by children under 12 when it passed the Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) in 2008. Under the act, lead paint found on toys must not exceed 600 parts per million (ppm) if manufactured/sold 6 months after the Act was passed, 300 ppm more than 1 year after its passage, and 100 ppm more than 3 years afterwards. Many toys have since been recalled because they contain excessive amounts of lead.

Children's developing bodies absorb lead at a more rapid rate than do adults. Lead exposure can have long-lasting negative effects on a child's life. Children who are exposed to lead may experience the following:

  • Brain damage
  • Nervous system disorders
  • Behavior and learning problems
  • Stunted growth
  • Hearing problems
  • Frequent headaches
